Comedy Writing 101: Foundations

Course Description
* NOW OPEN * Learn To Write! Writing is just improv on paper and is about taking your funny and interesting everyday observations and stories and giving them a home. This 6-week in-person class is a relaxed, collaborative course designed for total beginners in our signature supportive environment. If you love finding the funny in daily life, want a creative, low-stress outlet, or want to keep your comedic skills sharp after your group improv class ended, then this is for you! We focus on short, punchy pieces that help you sharpen your comedic voice, share your humor, and become a more engaging storyteller in everyday life, work, and social media. What You'll Learn: - Experience a collaborative “writers’ room” using "Yes, And" to build ideas together. - Learn five foundational comedy scene types and how structure makes things hilarious. - Turn everyday observations into funny, engaging stories and ideas. - Strengthen your natural sense of humor by understanding why things are funny. - Leave class with a collection of finished pieces you wrote and are proud of. No prior writing or comedy experience necessary, just an interest in having fun and being creative! (Note: This course focuses on comedic scripts and sketches, not stand-up comedy). Each student will also receive weekly writing exercises, FREE Writing Software, and our curated video resources to enhance their overall learning experience. Class Size: Limited to 12 students for maximum personal attention and group collaboration. Length: Sessions are 3 hours, and meets for 6 weeks in-person.* Requirements: Ages 18+. Attendance of Week 1 (Foundations Class) is required to participate in the session. No refunds/transfers will be possible. All other Terms apply.

Courses are non-refundable unless otherwise required by law. • Transfers may be possible (not guaranteed) if requested by email at least 7 days before your course begins, depending on availability. A $35 fee applies. Transfers expire 30 days after being offered. One-Day transfers are available only up into 48 hours before class. • One-time mistaken registrations may be refunded within 24 hours, minus a $30 fee. • Natural disasters, local emergencies, or others beyond our control do not qualify for refunds, but transfers will be offered when possible (fee waived). • Missing or being late to 3+ classes means you’ll be removed and not pass the course. (This applies to repeat students as well). Notes are available if you miss up to 2 classes with prior notice for Core Improv and Writing program lessons, not electives or specialty courses. • Instructors may change due to professional commitments. No refunds or transfers are available for instructor changes. • Participation is voluntary and involves inherent risks. You assume full responsibility for your participation, including physical or emotional injury. • We reserve the right to remove students for inappropriate or harmful conduct, with no refund, to maintain a safe, inclusive learning environment. • Harassment, boundary-crossing, or discriminatory behavior will not be tolerated and may result in permanent removal. • Photos or videos may be used in Improv-LA marketing unless you opt out by emailing classes@improv-la.com with your class info. • Coupon codes must be applied at checkout and cannot be added retroactively.
